Two announcements of two purple martin events happening on the same day!

We'll be having an 'Open House' purple martin banding event (with our federally-licensed bander) on Saturday June 22nd, starting at Prairie Ridge Ecostation in Raleigh. We'll be banding young martins from the nest that are of appropriate size. We may go from there to University Club afterwards. Time: 9:00am. Save the date and plan to join us!

25th Annual Purple Martin Field Day
Date: Saturday, June 22, 2019

Time: Presentations begin at 11:00 a.m. (Please arrive before 11:00 a.m.)

Location: A private farm in Louisa County, VA (central VA, about 60 miles NW of Richmond)

How do you attract Purple Martins? Lance Wood and several other presenters will teach you how to GET martins, attract MORE martins (if you already have some), and manage them properly so you won’t LOSE them. Which martin housing is the safest?—Gourds or Houses? Do martins in Virginia LIKE gourds or houses better? Will martins eat all my MOSQUITOES? Come and find out!!! At this event on the farm of Mrs. Merle Wood and her son, Purple Martin expert Lance Wood, you will learn the habitat martins require, and how to protect birds from snakes, hawks, owls, raccoons, House Sparrows, Starlings, wind damage, and lightning. You’ll see a spectacular martin colony that has grown from 4 martin pairs in 1992 to over 130 pairs! This kind of growth happens only with proper equipment, knowledge of the best management techniques, and hard work by Purple Martin caretakers known as “landlords.” And YOU can learn how to do it all! FREE!

The program begins at 11:00 a.m. Bring your lunch to eat while you listen to presentations, enjoying watching hundreds of Purple Martins soaring and feeding their nestlings! After the main program, you can buy gourds/seeds, and learn to grow gourds and modify them to create safe, long-lasting Purple Martin homes. You will receive free literature on martin attraction and management, and catalogs for high-quality martin equipment! Events end by 3:00 p.m.
Come and join the fun!

No registration. Event is FREE, but donations are appreciated to help cover expenses.

BRING: Lawn chairs, shoes for wet grass, binoculars, notepad, bag lunch/drink, and camera.
Please do not bring pets—we’ll share ours with you!
